The Superbowl has always been one of the biggest events in the United States, with the popular Halftime shows witnessing some of the greatest performances of all time. Back in 2022, instead of traditionally having one artist headline the show, the NFL had Shakira and Jennifer Lopez headline it together.
However, Lopez wasn’t too happy with the decision, as can be heard in her Netflix documentary, Halftime. As per the documentary, the On the Floor hitmaker was stressed about the limited time they were given, despite there being two headliners, and called it the worst idea in the world.
This, needless to say, generated a lot of controversy (see Buzzfeed), and Emily M Austen, a PR expert, claimed that thus began the gradual downfall of Lopez. While talking to Femail, Austen stated,
“In the last decade, despite her love life being well broadcasted, there was still an air of mystery around her, as a mega superstar… Her behavior seemed uncompromising and whingy, having to share a stage with Shakira. Her grievance about it wasn’t expressed eloquently and made her seem unlikable.”
With several tour dates canceled amid weak ticket sales and the This Is Me… Now tour rebranded (via Variety), even her film This Is Me… Now has not been as well-received. The expect further added how her relationship with Ben Affleck, too, has aided in the decrease of the popularity.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s relationship has always been a matter of deep contention among fans. While many fans reckon the two are the ultimate endgame, others are often comparing how good Affleck looked with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
While talking to Femail, PR expert Emily M Austen stated her popularity has also been affected due to her relationship with Affleck.
“In the shadow of beloved and long-suffering Jennifer Garner, [Ben Affleck’s ex-wife] much of the imagery we have seen from J Lo has been mundane – car rides with Ben, curbside arguments, fast food takeaways.”
The 2023 Grammy controversy (see Page Six) has also made fans doubt their devotion to the singer.
“Often looking miserable. This has shattered the fourth wall, one which we’d all bought into. We didn’t want her to be a normal person.”
While Lopez and Affleck continue navigating their love life and career simultaneously, these controversies and comments are sure to follow. Yet there is no denying that even though Lopez’s popularity might be dwindling, the actress and singer remains a crucial part of the entertainment industry.
