The 31-year-old singer and actress opened up about her purposeful three-year hiatus from the internet and social media and her honest thoughts about quitting music to concentrate entirely on acting:
“I woke up one morning and looked at Instagram, like every other person, and I was done. I was tired of reading horrible things. I was tired of seeing other people’s lives. After that decision, it was instant freedom. My life in front of me was my life, and I was present, and I could not have been more happy about it.”

During her appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the singer-actress talked about her decision to continue her acting career. She stated the following (via Deadline):
“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show at the same time [Wizards of Waverly Place], and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on.”
Gomez went on to say that managing workload is part of it, sharing that “I went to a mental institute and canceled one of my tours” due to the pressures and amount of work that come with being a pop star.
“It just got to me because I love working, and it distracts me from bad things.”
