One lick is all it takes: can Dua Lipa conquer the world of ice-cream as well as pop?

Are you talking about the English and Albanian singerwinner of seven Brits and three Grammys, and included this year on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most important people in the world? Yes, that Dua Lipa. Not another, less-celebrated Dua Lipa.

One Kiss is all it takes, fallin’ in love with me, possibilities …” Yes. Though maybe now make that: One lick is all it takes …

Excuse me? She’s branching out.

Dog training? Painting and decorating on a budget? Nope, ice-cream.

Cool. What kind of ice-cream? Dairy ice-cream, non-dairy ice-cream, ice-cream cones, ice-cream desserts, ice-cream cakes and ice-cream drinks, as well as milkshakes and yoghurts. She’s applied for a licence to protect her name as a brand for the marketing of all of the above. She is just waiting for approval from the government’s Intellectual Property Office.

Will there be Dua Lipa lollipops? We certainly hope so.

And surely she should be collaborating with Vanilla Ice? Ice, ice, baby. Wrong generation really. Though interestingly she did tell Greg James on his Radio 1 show that she likes to “get vanilla ice-cream and I put olive oil on it, and sea salt”.

So perhaps we shouldn’t expect the more traditional ice-cream flavours from Dua’s chilled dessert range? No details yet, but she also revealed to James that she is not a fan of chocolate ice-cream.

Is she the first pop star to do ice-cream, I wonder? Well, Ben & Jerry’s have done flavours inspired by musicians – Cherry Garcia and Phish Food most famously. And they once teamed up with the Elton John Aids Foundation and brought out a flavour with peanut butter cookie dough and butter brickle.

What was it called? Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road.

Obviously. Midge Ure should get into it, surely? What, as in Ultravox? How come, grandad?

This means nothing to me, oh … Vienetta. Maybe Pass Notes’ older readers will have some idea what you’re on about. Back to Dua Lipa, please.

Is it a first for her, this branching out? She already has a lifestyle and culture publishing venture called Service95.

What’s that then? It’s a newsletter, featuring a message from Lipa, and guest contributions on a range of subjects such as culture, style, recommendations etc. She has also done a podcast.

Who hasn’t, franklyIce-cream is the next natural step in the journey to world domination. She was included in the Sunday Times Rich List for 2024, with an estimated net worth of £90m.

Do say: “Seaweed and chilli gelato, please, in a cone.”

Don’t say: “Can I have a Flake with that, love?”
